Compression Garments For Liposuction
Post-surgical compression garments are commonly worn after liposuction surgery.  The compression, or strategically placed tightness, of the garment helps keep swelling down and can assist in tissue adhering back normally.  The compression also lessens pain and assists in reducing the fluid retention faster which can decrease your healing time and the build up of abnormal scar tissue.  Although a garment may advise it is for post-surgical use, specifically liposuction, these garments are not created equally.   Higher quality garments are easily differentiated when placed side by side.  However, many first-time patients are not able to do this before their surgeries.  We will outline the two most commonly recommended surgical garments by board certified plastic surgeons and patients alike.

Stages: Why Two Garments For One Procedure?
When shopping for Compression Garments you will sometimes see the term Stage 1 and Stage 2  These descriptions coincide with the stage of recovery you are in.  Stage 1 garments are what your surgeon will put you in after your surgery (before you wake up) and it is what you will wear until he or she feels you are ready to move up to a Stage 2 garment.   The Stage 1 garment usually has zippers with a protective lining and is sized slightly larger than your Stage 2 garments. They commonly also have an open crotch feature which allows you to relieve yourself without taking off your garment, although Stage 2 garments sometimes have this feature as well.  The Stage 2 Garment sometimes has more compression panels, is sized slightly smaller and therefore is more difficult to get into.  They normally do not have zippers, but some may.

• Marena Comfortwear: Marena Garments have the highest rating because of the fabric they use (F5 Comfortweave) and the durability of the compression panels.  The fabric used in making these garments is antimicrobial in nature and presently Marena manufactures the only garments made with such a fiber.  They also seem to keep their stretch after numerous washings and I never had any seam issues or rips/running.  I have used Marena garments and highly recommend them.

• Design Veronique: I have used Design Veronique (DV) garments as well and can also recommend them with confidence.  The quality of the garment and the compression is high, plus they lasted for months without ripping or tearing.  Although Marena garments tested higher in university tests, I honestly don't have a complaint with DV garments.

Can I Just Wear Spandex Or Some Other Tight, Stretchy Garment?
Post-surgical compression garments are procedure-specific and provide just the right amount of compression in areas where you need it most.  These medical garments have been manufactured after considerable research and development and are made from the highest quality materials.  These materials hold their shape, compression and are easily washable and can withstand long-term wear and laundering.  Post-surgical compression garments usually incorporate reinforced compression panels, covered stitching, strategically placed  and covered zippers, hooks, and snaps.  They have just the right amount of compression and not too much where it shouldn't be.  This means your Nike running tights are not ideal to wear after your liposuction surgery. 

Having too much compression can also cause improper healing, or worse, necrosis and irregular scar tissue where the garment may fold.  Wearing the correct post-surgical garments can significantly affect your healing time and result.  Be sure to abide by your surgeon's recommendations and purchase what has been proven to work, safely and effectively.

When Your Surgeon Instructs You Not To Wear A Compression Garment
It is true, some surgeons do not have their patients wear compression garments for various reasons.  Although many do.  It is imperative that you abide by your own surgeon's (a skilled, experienced surgeon ,mind you) wishes as he knows what works best for the patients in his practice.  Do ask why he or she feels that a compression garment is not necessary, however.  I have spoken to surgeons who did not recommend compression garments for the patients of his who had minor volume removal and elastic skin.  I was also very good friends with one of those patients and her liposuction turned out great.  But this does not mean to go against your own surgeon's wishes. 

How Much Is Too Much Compression, Or Not Enough?
Although you may feel like a sausage the first few days, compression garments should not cause you pain .  The compression garment should be supportive enough to keep swelling down but not cause you discomfort in general or the sensation of truly being unable to breath.  Compression garments should also not cut off circulation to the extremities.  If the garment feels loose, and you'll know, you are not getting enough compression.  

Your surgeon will generally know what size to place you in and then be able to see it on you.  Plastic surgeons are very experienced in determining this as well as placing them on you while you are still under.  You will wake up in your garment so your surgeon will already know before you wake on how your garment will fit and make adjustments if necessary..  From personal experience my first Design Veronique lipo garment was too small, they determined this while I was still asleep and switched to a Marena garment that was a better fit.  This gave me something to use and alternate with until my larger DV garment came in.

Another important note is that if you find you are at your computer desk, or wherever and you are hunched over, causing folds in the abdominal area, be mindful of this.  Constant pressure and lack thereof in other areas can cause scar tissue to form due to the unevenness of the compression.  With lack of compression in these areas or too much for that matter, the fluid will build up in the area of least resistance.  This will cause expansion of the tissues and subsequent collagen formation in the areas which are not yet healed.   Tissue adhesion may also be an issue.

Tip: If you are having trouble getting into your garment, you can use baby powder to get into the garment more easily .  Of course, this is not for garments which are clearly too small.  Be sure not to get baby powder into any incisions.
